Access Token
A short-lived credential used in the OAuth flow to call APIs. It typically has a validity period of one hour, after which it must be refreshed using a refresh token.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Using Access Tokens with very short TTLs (e.g., 5 minutes) paired with Refresh Tokens is currently the more widely adopted compromise in the industry.
Shortening token validity periods, introducing token revocation lists, or using short-lived Access Tokens paired with a Refresh Token mechanism are all common approaches to mitigating the phantom permissions problem.
When the permissions claim is empty, there is a semantic ambiguity: it may mean the user genuinely has no permissions, or it may mean permission information was not written into the token, and the default behavior must be explicitly agreed upon at the design stage.
An Access Token is essentially a snapshot of permissions, not a real-time permission query.
When an identity provider issues an Access Token, it encodes the user's roles, permissions, and organizational affiliation at the moment of issuance, and the token's content remains fixed for its validity period unless it expires or is actively revoked.
When a resource server validates a token, it reads the state at the moment of issuance, not the actual permissions currently in the backend database.
Revoking a role only changes the permission record in the database and cannot retroactively modify already-issued tokens; therefore, a user whose permissions have been revoked can still access resources beyond their authorization until the token expires, with the window length depending on the token TTL.
"Mint" refers to deriving a new access token with an independent lifecycle from existing credential material (such as a Session Cookie), typically in the form of a JWT or opaque string.
The agent exchanges the authorization code for an access token at the token endpoint, and after the token expires, it can use a Refresh Token to obtain a new access token without requiring the user to authorize again.
