Actionable Metric
In product and analytics contexts, a metric that can directly guide decisions and is strongly correlated with core outcomes, as distinct from vanity metrics and from proxy metrics alone.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Vanity metrics are data that look good but do not directly reflect business health, such as cumulative registered users, page views, or total early contract value; actionable metrics such as customer acquisition cost (CAC), customer lifetime value (LTV), sales cycle length, and net revenue retention (NRR) can directly guide adjustments to sales strategy.
When evaluating a metric, ask: if a number is optimized to an extreme value, does the real goal improve in tandem? If the answer is no, then it is at best a vanity metric, and using it to drive an agent will inevitably lead to goal drift.
An actionable metric should be able to directly guide decisions and be strongly correlated with core outcomes (such as bug-fix rate or merge throughput).
