BatchNorm
A normalization technique used in deep learning to stabilize training dynamics. It computes the mean and variance of activations over a mini-batch and recenters and rescales the features, thereby suppressing abnormal gradients.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Updating normalization statistics often improves performance when handling corrupted images, but once a single class dominates the batch, this intervention instead severely harms accuracy.
Practical consensus tends toward: freeze the BN statistics with small datasets and small batches; when the data volume is sufficient and the batch size is large, allow the BN layers to update.
If the BatchNorm layers are set to train mode during fine-tuning, the running mean and running variance will be re-estimated and overwritten by the statistics of the current mini-batch; when the batch size is small (such as 8 or 16), this causes the running statistics to drift drastically and destroys the learned normalization baseline, manifesting as loss oscillation or even a sharp drop in accuracy.
Normalization layers in neural networks (BatchNorm, LayerNorm) continuously perform data purification during training, smoothly estimating noise through batch statistics, and the perturbation of anomalous samples on the overall mean and variance is diluted by the large number of normal samples.
模型重参数化的经典例子包括将卷积层与后续BatchNorm层融合为单个卷积操作,或利用线性代数恒等变换重组矩阵乘法顺序。
The 128×128 CelebA version in this article adjusts the stride to make the latent feature map 8×8×256 and adds BatchNorm and LeakyReLU after each convolution, where BatchNorm is an additional addition not described in the original paper.
The 2017 paper "On Calibration of Modern Neural Networks" by Guo et al. systematically revealed that increased model depth, use of BatchNorm layers, and longer training periods all exacerbate miscalibration.
残差连接(ResNet)于2015年引入,与BatchNorm和ReLU等激活函数一起有效缓解了梯度消失问题
BatchNorm was proposed by Ioffe and Szegedy in 2015 and alleviates gradient vanishing and gradient explosion by normalizing the output of each layer.
A 2019 study by Yang et al. pointed out that BatchNorm may in fact introduce new gradient instability in the early stages of training.
