CommonMark
A standardized specification for Markdown syntax that defines parsing rules for fenced code blocks, lists, lazy continuation, and other constructs. It is a syntax standard that is sensitive to whitespace.
Timeline (last 90 days)
At the CommonMark AST level, bold text on its own line is parsed as a separate paragraph node, whereas a bold label on the same line as text is merely an inline node within the paragraph.
The CommonMark specification parses Markdown documents into an abstract syntax tree (AST), in which block-level elements and inline elements are entirely different node types.
Markdown specifies that a fenced code block inside a list item must be indented to align with the starting column of the list item's content, with an unordered list `-` marker being 4 spaces (or the marker width plus one)
When a CommonMark parser encounters a fenced code block opening line with insufficient indentation, it treats it as a lazy continuation of the previous paragraph, causing the code block to collapse into an ordinary paragraph without reporting an error
In 2014, Jeff Atwood and others drove the creation of the CommonMark specification, establishing an unambiguous standard for Markdown.
In 2014, John MacFarlane launched the CommonMark project in an attempt to establish a strict and unambiguous syntax specification for Markdown.
Markdown was released by John Gruber in 2004, and the CommonMark specification did not launch until 2014.
