Compute-Intensive Red Teaming
A security testing method that targets training and evaluation infrastructure (training clusters, communication, checkpoint storage). It consumes compute on the same order as actual training to reproduce attack paths in distributed training scenarios, and is used to continuously verify the effectiveness of training-environment isolation measures.
Timeline (last 90 days)
OpenAI uses high-compute red-teaming to conduct attack testing against the training and evaluation infrastructure itself, simulating breaching isolation, lateral movement, stealing weights, or interfering with training jobs.
High-compute red teaming is fundamentally different from model red teaming: model red teaming uses prompts and adversarial samples to test whether model outputs cross boundaries; high-compute red teaming targets training clusters as the attack objective and requires compute on the same scale as real training.
OpenAI uses high-compute red teaming as a means of continuously verifying the effectiveness of containment, rather than a one-time acceptance check.
