End-to-End Encryption
A communication security mechanism ensuring that messages can only be decrypted and read by the two endpoints of a conversation, with service providers unable to access plaintext content. It is the core security technology used by mainstream messaging applications such as Signal and WhatsApp.
Core Facts
WhatsApp uses end-to-end encryption, with its underlying implementation based on the Signal protocol developed by Open Whisper Systems.
TLS encryption, on which HTTPS relies, only protects the transmission channel between two communication endpoints; in a relay proxy model, the relay server is the TLS session endpoint and can read plaintext request content after completing TLS termination.
Common implementation schemes for end-to-end encryption include X25519-based key exchange combined with AES-256-GCM symmetric encryption; for LAN direct-connect scenarios, TLS 1.3 is already sufficient to meet transport security requirements.
Timeline (last 90 days)
E2EE cannot prevent the recipient from taking screenshots, the device from being implanted with malware, or the account itself from being taken over.
Reducing the total amount of data (local storage, end-to-end encryption, regularly clearing history) is reducing the attack surface.
Traditional E2EE products cannot perform AI analysis of content on the server side.
For a large model to be effective, data usually needs to be fed into a readable context, yet data in an E2EE environment is invisible to the server.
Consumer-grade AI tools generally use end-to-end encryption, so at the enterprise network layer only the destination domain is visible and content-level inspection is impossible.
BlockSurvey's response data is end-to-end encrypted, and the AI side does not touch the data.
In the survey scenario, end-to-end encryption means respondents' submitted answers are encrypted in the browser, and only the survey creator holding the key can decrypt and view them.
The threat model of end-to-end encryption does not cover scenarios such as device compromise, operating system backdoors or screen recording.
Chat lock does not replace end-to-end encryption; conversation content is still stored in readable form on OpenAI's servers and may be used for model training or security review.
Sigsaly's unconditional security depended on the absolute secrecy and one-time use of keys, whereas modern E2EE is mostly based on computational complexity assumptions (such as the difficulty of factoring large numbers) and is not information-theoretically secure.
