Gating
In a prompt pipeline, the use of a conditional signal to decide whether a revision step is executed. When the criticism stage outputs no named defect, the gate closes and the preliminary answer is returned; critical suggestions are adopted only when a named defect is present. It is a conservative strategy for avoiding unfounded changes.

Accuracy alone cannot support gating thresholds; the decision model must be well calibrated so that the output probability values reflect true occurrence rates.
Waypoint-OPD gates the endpoint shift based on direction consistency: when the direction is consistent it is retained (gate value close to 1), and when the direction conflicts it is suppressed (gate value close to 0).
The gated metacognitive pipeline rescued 10 wrong answers and broke 0 correct answers; the ungated version rescued 5 and broke 5 correct answers.
After removing the gating condition from the metacognitive prompt pipeline, accuracy fell to zero, reverting to the 5/17 baseline.
The gating rule is: only when the critique stage outputs a named defect does the decision stage make a modification; if the critique does not point out a specific error, the initial answer is returned unchanged.
Forcing critique on nonexistent defects produces pseudo-defects, which in turn trigger harmful modifications, causing ungated correction to undo the 5 misreadings fixed in the first stage and break 5 correct answers.
An example gated escalation rule: amounts greater than 300 yuan or confidence below 85% should be escalated to manual review, amounts exceeding 2,000 yuan must be mandatorily handled by a human with additional financial review, and these constraints should be enforced in code rather than written in the prompt.
Shopify's workflow has four gates in total: a behavioral gate, a UI gate, an adversarial review gate, and human review.
The two design pillars of the workflow are checkpoints and gates; gates are mandatory checks that every piece of work must pass, and work that does not pass cannot proceed to the next task.
Existing tool-call safety measures fall into two categories—tool selection and gating—both of which rest on the implicit premise that a call points to a real, existing tool.
