Graphiti
Timeline (last 90 days)
The knowledge graph data model (entities with observations and relations) is the schema of the official MCP reference server, and what mem0, Graphiti, cognee, Hindsight and mcp-memory-service store are all different variants of the same triple.
Among Zep / Graphiti, the Zep console has graph visualization while Graphiti does not; self-hosting is supported only by Graphiti (requiring Neo4j or FalkorDB), and the Zep server is closed-source; free 10k credits/month, Flex $125/month; memory is extracted from episodes.
Self-hosted memory is almost always free (the OSS apps of mem0, Graphiti, Letta, cognee, Hindsight, mcp-memory-service and supermemory), or locked behind enterprise contracts (Zep BYOC, mem0 local deployment, cognee BYOC), and the only public self-serve tier that includes self-hosting is supermemory's Scale at $399/month.
The author chose Graphiti as the graph framework because it allows entity and edge types to be defined in Python, comes with a schema, typed edges and hybrid search, and builds graphs fast.
Graphiti uses the Apache-2.0 license, supports Neo4j, FalkorDB, or Amazon Neptune, provides a temporal knowledge graph with validity intervals on both entities and relationships, and can query what was true on a given day; it is delivered as an engine rather than a service, requiring you to build identity, authentication, queues, backups, and application APIs yourself.
Graphiti provides only engine capabilities and does not include the productized functions of the Zep service layer such as identity authentication, queues, monitoring, and backups; migrating to Graphiti requires building this infrastructure yourself.
Zep announced a change to its open-source strategy in April 2025, and the Community Edition was discontinued; what is currently open source is the underlying temporal graph engine Graphiti, not the Zep service itself.
Graphiti is Zep's open-source temporal graph engine, supporting time-validity intervals for entities and relationships, able to answer "what was true at a given point in time", requires pairing with a graph database (such as Neo4j, FalkorDB, Neptune), and provides a Server and an MCP adapter for self-hosting.
Graphiti's contradiction-triggers-invalidation mechanism is exemplary (old edges are retained and marked with expired_at), and its evaluation story is the most complete of the three (unit tests + end-to-end tests + LongMemEval oracle), but it has gaps in the audit sink and unscoped search.
The MAQS-Way team used the same checklist to conduct a static audit of three open-source memory systems, Mem0, Graphiti, and Letta MemFS, adopting file:line evidence and a constructive tone, and rated exemplary items and gap items for each system.
