Grip Sensor
An open-source hardware module that estimates gripping force by measuring PWM servo current, providing tactile feedback, stall protection and teach-in functionality for low-cost robotic grasping scenarios.
Timeline (last 90 days)
The Grip Sensor module estimates the gripping force on the servo's output shaft by measuring the current flowing to the servo.
The Grip Sensor module is equipped with a status LED that lights up when it detects that an object is being gripped.
The Grip Sensor's "teaching button" allows the user to manually grip an object to the ideal force and then press and hold the button; the module records the current threshold at that moment and automatically grips with the memorized force next time.
The Grip Sensor module can prevent the servo from overheating due to stalling caused by over-closing.
The author has currently hand-built 5 Grip Sensor boards and hopes to distribute them to users with needs for testing.
The accuracy of current-based force estimation is affected by supply voltage, temperature and individual differences between servos, making it suitable for scenarios that do not require high precision.
The Grip Sensor requires no modification of the servo's internal structure; simply connecting the module in series provides force sensing and overload protection.
The open-source status of the Grip Sensor is not yet clear; the author has not stated whether it is fully open source, but community convention is to publish the design files after testing.
