Grounding DINO
An open-vocabulary object detection and grounding multimodal model that combines a visual encoder with a language model. It enables localization of arbitrary objects in images based on natural language descriptions, supporting open-set detection scenarios.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Grounding DINO performs strongly on zero-shot detection benchmarks, with relatively high recall for custom categories; its output boxes are usually loose, but it has relatively few missed detections.
For a small dataset of 500 images, the recommendation is to first manually annotate 80-100 images precisely as a seed set, fine-tune a lightweight detector with the seed set, then pre-annotate the remaining 400 images, take the union of the two rounds of pre-annotation results, and have humans confirm and correct them.
Open-vocabulary detection models (such as Grounding DINO) are friendlier to custom categories, and targets can be specified with text prompts.
Multimodal models such as Grounding DINO and Florence-2 combine visual encoders with language models to improve localization accuracy under open-vocabulary conditions.
Open-vocabulary detection systems based on vision-language foundation models such as CLIP and Grounding DINO enable robots to retrieve any object in a scene using natural language, while ConceptFusion and LERF integrate CLIP features into three-dimensional maps.
Traditional closed-set detectors such as Faster R-CNN or the YOLO series can only detect predefined categories in the training set, whereas Grounding DINO can theoretically detect any object described in natural language.
This mosaic solution performs adequately when the logo position is prominent and high-contrast.
The developer adopted a combined approach of Grounding DINO bounding-box pixelation to achieve automatic brand logo blurring in video.
Grounding DINO fails when detecting logos with low contrast or those laser-printed on metallic/textured surfaces, and may even miss them entirely.
A developer shared on Reddit a brand logo pixelation pipeline built on Grounding DINO bounding-box-interior pixelation, using apparel brands such as Puma, Adidas, Reebok, and Levi's as test subjects.

50%UnverifiedWhen the logo position is prominent and has high contrast with the background, the Grounding DINO plus pixelation solution delivers acceptable detection performance.
50%UnverifiedWhen a logo shares exactly the same texture and color as the surrounding surface (such as a logo laser-printed on a metallic or textured surface), Grounding DINO has difficulty capturing the boundary or even misses the detection entirely.
50%UnverifiedFor low-contrast logo detection, a two-stage cascaded architecture can be adopted: first use a fast detector (such as Grounding DINO or YOLO) to localize candidate regions, then process with a VLM, in order to balance accuracy and efficiency.

50%UnverifiedFailure to detect low-contrast LOGOs is a common limitation of almost all appearance-feature-based detection models, not unique to Grounding DINO.
