High-temperature Superconducting Magnet
A magnet made using high-temperature superconducting materials such as REBCO coated conductors. It can remain superconducting above 20 K and has a higher critical magnetic field, enabling more compact fusion devices.
Timeline (last 90 days)
SPARC attempts to leverage the miniaturization enabled by high-temperature superconducting magnets to achieve plasma confinement performance comparable to large tokamaks at a smaller size.
The high-temperature superconducting magnet technology used by CFS can produce a magnetic field strength approximately twice that of conventional superconducting magnets (approximately 20 tesla), theoretically allowing the device volume to be reduced to about 1/40 that of ITER.
Multiple fusion companies, including Commonwealth Fusion Systems, have positioned high-temperature superconducting magnets as the core selling point of their technological breakthroughs.
