Jest
Jest is an open-source JavaScript testing framework developed by Meta (formerly Facebook), suitable for unit, integration, and end-to-end testing of front-end and Node.js projects. Key features include zero-configuration setup, built-in code coverage reporting, snapshot testing, and mocking support, as well as parallel test execution for improved efficiency. Jest is compatible with major front-end frameworks such as React, Vue, and Angular, and is one of the most widely used testing tools in the JavaScript ecosystem.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Test collection is a separate phase in mainstream testing frameworks (such as pytest, JUnit, and Jest) that occurs before the test bodies are executed.
Jest 30's `--randomize` shuffles tests within a file and displays the seed, and applies only to the default `jest-circus` runner; `--seed=<num>` sets the seed, whose value must be between -2147483648 and 2147483647.
bash's `$RANDOM` returns a value between 0 and 32767, safely within the Jest seed range, but its entropy is low and duplicate seeds may occur in large loops; a duplicate seed means a duplicate order, diluting the benefit of multi-order coverage.
The reason claude-code-setup recommends Playwright MCP is that Jest runs on jsdom and cannot verify real popup UI and content script behavior.
The netflix-intro-skipper project uses plain JavaScript with no build step and uses Jest and fast-check (property testing) for testing, with a total of 13 test files and about 6,000 lines of test code.
Jest's test.only and its aliases it.only and fit are used to run a subset while debugging; leaving a single .only means the rest of the tests in that file never run, yet the suite still reports green.
Common frameworks for software testing include Cypress, Jest, Vite Test, Playwright and Pytest.
The author's choice of Enzyme rather than Jest as the analogy implies that Catalyst is positioned as an inspection tool that goes deep into the Agent execution chain, rather than merely end-to-end evaluation.
