LPIPS
A perceptual image similarity metric that computes distances in the feature space of deep neural networks. Compared to pixel-level MSE loss, it more closely aligns with human visual perception and is commonly used for training and evaluating image and video generation models.
Timeline (last 90 days)
On five datasets using the SD3.5 model, SpectralCanary preserves the visual quality of released images (SSIM 0.989, LPIPS 0.022) with a near-zero FID change (average ΔFID 0.05).
On the novel-view reenactment task, VDAs on the BecomingLit dataset reduces facial LPIPS by 29% and improves JOD by 66% compared with the strongest single-image 3D avatar method.
Evaluation of general video inpainting usually directly computes whole-frame reconstruction error (PSNR, SSIM, or LPIPS), but this protocol is not suitable for video subtitle removal, because subtitles occupy only a small region of the frame and whole-frame metrics are diluted by the large amount of unmodified background pixels.
PWM-WROP achieves the best LPIPS of 0.081 on perceptual distance (the second best is 0.105).
The researchers instantiated this framework in two spaces—pixel space and LPIPS feature space—and claim this is the first lower bound on reconstruction distortion measured directly using LPIPS.
LPIPS scores published by Unsloth relative to BF16 Turbo transformer are: Q8_0=0.036, Q4_K_M=0.153, Q2_K=0.374.
DreamSim is a deep learning-based perceptual similarity metric trained to align with human judgments of image similarity, and it is closer to subjective visual experience than LPIPS or FID.
Temporal consistency typically requires dedicated metrics such as optical flow error and LPIPS inter-frame differences, or manual subjective review, and is a common challenge in automated video quality assessment.
MSE loss tends to produce blurry results to minimize pixel-level error, while perceptual loss (LPIPS) can better measure visual similarity.
LPIPS (Learned Perceptual Image Patch Similarity) has a far higher correlation with human subjective evaluation than traditional PSNR and SSIM metrics.
