Metadata Filtering
A data query optimization pattern that allows key-value conditions to be attached to query requests. The server performs the filtering and returns only matching data, avoiding full dataset retrieval by the client, thereby reducing network transfer volume and client-side memory pressure.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Vector databases typically allow metadata (such as effective date, version number, status, etc.) to be attached to each vector; at retrieval time, metadata filtering can exclude deprecated documents or sort by time to return the latest version first.
The second layer requires strict context engineering: enforce metadata filtering (timestamps, document status, version tags) before semantic search, and set fallback strings such as 'INSUFFICIENT_CONTEXT'.
Agent memory retrieval usually adopts a hybrid strategy: vector retrieval captures semantic similarity, metadata filtering narrows the candidate set, and a reranking model performs the final ranking based on task context and preference weights.
在技术文档问答中,同一问题在不同版本文档中可能有不同答案,因此需要元数据过滤和时间感知策略,而非仅依赖向量相似度。
Questions with explicit constraints (time, category, permissions) should be resolved first with filtering, while semantically ambiguous questions are handled by vector search—the two complement rather than replace each other.
The original author states that approximately 80% of accuracy issues can be resolved through metadata filtering, but this is an estimate based on personal experience rather than a rigorous statistical conclusion.
