MLflow
MLflow is an open-source platform for managing the machine learning lifecycle, originally initiated by Databricks and maintained by the community. It provides core capabilities including experiment tracking, logging of model training parameters, model version registration and management, and model deployment, with support for multiple mainstream machine learning frameworks. MLflow aims to help data scientists and engineers achieve standardization, reproducibility, and collaboration throughout the machine learning development process.
Core Facts
MLflow was open-sourced by Databricks in 2018
MLflow Model Registry provides model version management capabilities, with models progressing through four stages: None → Staging → Production → Archived.
A complete AI model version encompasses at minimum the weight files, a versioned snapshot of the training data, the training configuration and runtime environment, and evaluation results along with benchmark datasets.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Databricks natively supports MLflow and Spark, enabling HP's data engineering and data science teams to collaborate on the same platform without moving data between multiple systems.
A number of tools focused on traceability already exist in the research field, such as MLflow, Weights & Biases (experiment logging and parameter tracking), DVC (data version control), and Jupyter (interactive notebook environment logging).
MLflow or Weights & Biases can be used to record experiments, compare results, and stay organized.
MLflow's AI Gateway converts Bedrock chat messages into plain strings and never sends cache points; LangChain's openwiki found that its cache middleware skips application inference profile ARNs.
The all-in-one platforms category contains 21 tools, with representative projects including Langfuse, MLflow, Opik, Agenta, and LangWatch.
The author recommends Langfuse, Opik, MLflow, Phoenix, and AcruxCore as tools with native LangChain integration.
MLflow, Neptune, Comet ML, and others are experiment tracking tools similar to W&B.
MLflow excels at full lifecycle management and tracking of models, but exposing them as production-grade endpoints still requires additional deployment configuration.
MLflow is an open-source MLOps platform led by Databricks, originally designed for traditional machine learning experiment management, and in recent years has expanded to include native support for LLMs and Agents.
When DSPy and MLflow are used together, DSPy is responsible for generating the optimized program while MLflow is responsible for persistently storing the program version, evaluation scores, and experiment context.
