Modelfile
A declarative model configuration file used by Ollama, analogous to Docker's Dockerfile. It allows users to rapidly create custom models by specifying a base model, parameters, system prompts, and other settings in a structured configuration format.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Each model in Ollama comes with a Modelfile, in which the TEMPLATE directive defines how the system prompt, multi-turn history and current user message are assembled into the prompt the model actually receives.
A custom Ollama model is essentially a configuration pointing to a base model; the weights remain those of the base model, and only the system prompt and parameters change.
This update adds a CAPABILITY declaration field to the Modelfile and an additive capabilities field to the create request.
Modelfile supports directives such as FROM, SYSTEM, PARAMETER, and TEMPLATE, and the FROM directive can specify either a local path or a model name on Ollama Hub.
When renaming a Modelfile, the .txt extension must be removed; otherwise Ollama cannot correctly recognize the configuration file.
When Ollama processes a FROM directive pointing to a local file, it does not copy the file but only creates a reference in the metadata database, making the operation fast and consuming no additional disk space.
Ollama supports creating reproducible model configurations using a Modelfile and is open-source under the MIT license.
A Modelfile is Ollama's model configuration description file; its syntax is similar to a Dockerfile, and its core fields include FROM, PARAMETER, and SYSTEM.
The command ollama create qwen14B -f Modelfile can be used to create a model based on a Modelfile configuration file.
During migration, it is necessary to check the Modelfile template configuration of the corresponding Ollama model to ensure that structured elements in the prompt are correctly injected.
