ModelRetryMiddleware
A middleware component in the LangChain framework used to automatically execute retry strategies when LLM calls fail, supporting configuration of retry counts, trigger conditions, backoff curves and failure handling methods.
Timeline (last 90 days)
In newer versions, LangChain introduced the ModelRetryMiddleware middleware component, used to automatically retry when a model call fails.
The Reddit community launched a discussion about the actual configuration of LangChain's ModelRetryMiddleware, collecting retry configurations for langchain>=1.3.16 in Python environments for LLM agent error handling research.
The solicitation template requires filling in the model provider and specific model, the use case (chatbot, batch pipeline or multi-step agent), the deployment environment (prototype, internal tool or production), and parameters such as max_retries, retry_on, on_failure, backoff_factor, initial_delay, max_delay and jitter.
The retry_on field of ModelRetryMiddleware allows passing exception types, custom callables or default values.
The on_failure option of ModelRetryMiddleware can be set to continue to skip failed items in batch scenarios, or to error in multi-step agents to let the upper-level orchestration logic take over.
LangChain middleware's default values already cover common best practices such as exponential backoff and jitter.
For a multi-step agent task involving five model calls, if each step is independently configured with max_retries=3, up to fifteen retries could occur in the worst case.
Alternatives to using ModelRetryMiddleware include retries built into provider SDKs, with_retry(), and self-built wrapper layers.
