Next-Gen General Purpose
A next-generation general-purpose service tier for Azure SQL Managed Instance that adopts an instance-level storage performance quota model, improving storage and compute resource efficiency and suited to most workloads.
Timeline (last 90 days)
The Next-Gen General Purpose service tier for SQL MI is now generally available.
Next-Gen General Purpose changes the storage performance quota from a per-file model to an instance-level model, raises the maximum number of databases per instance from 100 to 500, and doubles maximum storage from 16 TB to 32 TB.
Novakovic's overall picture of Next-Gen GP is: 3 to 5 times performance improvement in typical scenarios, up to 5 times density improvement, doubled storage scale, doubled compute elasticity, and roughly three times improvement in log performance.
In the HammerDB demonstration, after pulling the IOPS slider to maximum, the instance updated online without a maintenance window, without a restart and with zero connection interruption, with throughput jumping from about 7,000 transactions/minute to more than 70,000 transactions/minute.
