Omni Wheel
A wheel with a number of small rollers mounted around its circumference at an angle to the wheel axle. Because the small rollers can slide freely sideways, the chassis can translate in any direction without changing its orientation.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Omnidirectional wheels are sensitive to floor flatness and have low efficiency, while differential drive loses stability at high speed.
KITE uses a three-omnidirectional-wheel chassis design, with the three omnidirectional wheels arranged evenly at 120°, and by separately controlling the speed and direction of the three wheels, a resultant force in any direction on the plane can be synthesized.
