pdfplumber
A Python PDF parsing library built on top of pdfminer.six. It exposes characters, rectangles, lines, and other objects found on PDF pages as Python objects with precise coordinate attributes, and provides a high-level API for table detection. It is well suited for layout-aware document parsing scenarios.
Timeline (last 90 days)
pdfplumber is built on pdfminer.six and supports bordered-table detection and convenient access to words/characters, but borderless tables require parameter tuning.
For borderless tables, you can instead set vertical_strategy='text' and horizontal_strategy='text' in pdfplumber's table_settings, letting the algorithm infer column boundaries from text alignment positions.
pdfplumber's default table detection strategy relies on lines on the page (vector line segments) to infer cell boundaries and is stable for tables with complete borders; the three-line tables common in academic papers lack column separators, and default parameters often fail to detect them.
Open the page with pdfplumber and call page.extract_text(); if it returns an empty string or large numbers of (cid:NN), the text layer is missing or font mapping is abnormal, and you should switch to an OCR/ML pipeline.
If the PDF has a text layer, a layout-aware rule-based approach built on pdfminer.six/pdfplumber is lightweight, highly deterministic and low-cost to run; if it is a scanned document or a highly visual document, an OCR or ML pipeline (Docling, Marker, MinerU) is needed, at the cost of compute overhead.
MarkItDown (Microsoft) supports converting multiple formats to Markdown and excels at Office files and fast conversion, but PDF handling is relatively light (it uses pdfminer/pdfplumber underneath); the License is MIT.
In document processing, PyMuPDF extracts structured PDFs well but has heavy dependencies, while pdfplumber is more stable at table extraction.
Compared with pure text extraction tools such as PyPDF2 and pdfplumber, Docling preserves semantic structure information, making it suitable for building custom AST layout parsers.
arXiv的PDF解析是学术论文跨库检索的主要难点,公式、表格、双栏排版会导致通用解析器出错。
The project's tech stack uses Python, Qdrant as the vector database, rank_bm25 (BM25Okapi) for sparse retrieval, EURI LLM Gateway for chat and embedding models, and pdfplumber for page-level text extraction from PDFs.
