Penta
A music player application for iPhone and iPad that recreates the physical interaction experience of a 1990s five-disc CD changer, emphasizing realistic sound effects and foldable-screen adaptation, and reading directly from the Apple Music library.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Penta is an app that brings the interaction of a 1990s 5-disc CD changer to iPhone and iPad, and it has been adapted for the iPhone Duo's dual-screen form factor.
Penta's developer is John Seubert, with the Product Hunt username seubjoh.
Penta has 74 votes on Product Hunt, ranks 11th, and has 3 reviews.
All of Penta's clicks, gear turning and tray motor sounds were recorded from a real CD changer.
Penta itself is free and offers a one-time Pro unlock, whose main content is real scanned CD cover art.
Penta reads the Apple Music library directly, so users do not need to re-import their music.
On the iPhone Duo, Penta makes use of the foldable form factor: when the phone is closed it shows a CD jewel case appearance, when opened a disc can be "dropped" onto the turntable, and when held vertically it presents an interface with a CD wallet covering the disc bay and a folding animation.
Penta is currently only present on Product Hunt and GitHub, and its official website link is a Product Hunt redirect link.
Penta's target users include people who lived through the 1990s CD changer era, tech enthusiasts who enjoy tinkering with device interactions (especially iPhone Duo users), and heavy Apple Music users.
Penta does not try to replace Apple Music's native player, but offers a 1990s-style skin and sounds for the same music library.
