Proof of Work
A cryptographic mechanism requiring a computing party to complete a defined amount of computational work before obtaining a right or passing verification. It serves as the core consensus mechanism in Bitcoin and other blockchain systems, and has also been applied in anti-spam contexts.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Economic costs (such as small cryptocurrency payments or proof of work) can impose a tiny but real cost on each registration, negligible for an ordinary Agent but adding up linearly for a spammer.
Proof of work offers an admission cost in Agent registration scenarios that does not depend on human characteristics: the platform can issue a puzzle requiring repeated hash computations, and an Agent is allowed to register only after submitting the correct result.
The downside of proof of work is the energy and latency cost of computation, and attackers with large amounts of GPU power have a relatively greater advantage.
Common defenses against Sybil attacks include proof of work (PoW), staked identity and verifiable credentials (VC).
The 'proof of work' in this scenario relies on geolocation, timestamps and human visual judgment, not on computing power as in blockchain.
