SPI Flash
SPI Flash is a flash storage medium accessed through an SPI interface, typically in 8-pin packages. It is commonly used on camera mainboards to store firmware.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Firmware implants or bootkits can be written to the motherboard's SPI Flash chip, which sits outside the operating system and disk, and cannot be removed by reinstalling the system.
SPI Flash has limited capacity and limited write endurance, and frequent updates carry a risk of bricking the device.
eMMC and SPI Flash are the two common storage media on camera mainboards; eMMC with an integrated controller is usually soldered in a BGA package, while SPI Flash is mostly in 8-pin SOIC or WSON packages.
If an interruption (such as a power outage or program crash) occurs during firmware update within the window after erasure is complete but before writing is finished, the chip will retain an incomplete firmware image, rendering the device unable to boot; this type of BIOS-level corruption typically cannot be recovered through reinstalling the OS or conventional operations.
