Temporal
Temporal is an open-source distributed workflow orchestration platform for building reliable long-running business processes and microservice applications. It uses event sourcing to durably record every state change in a workflow, automatically replaying historical events after a process crash or restart to restore execution state. This approach shields developers from the complexity of fault handling in distributed systems, and the platform supports multiple mainstream programming languages.
Core Facts
Temporal records every state change of a workflow through Event Sourcing, and when a process resumes it rebuilds the state by replaying events.
Temporal uses an event sourcing mechanism that records all function call history as immutable logs, from which execution position can be recovered by replaying the logs.
Temporal abstracts workflows into persistent, resumable code execution units, so that even if a process crashes or a machine goes down, the workflow execution state can be saved and resumed from the point of interruption.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Temporal is a modern date-time API in a TC39 proposal that strictly distinguishes types such as time points (Temporal.Instant) and time-zone-aware local time (Temporal.ZonedDateTime).
Temporal is currently not a globally default-exported syntactic sugar that can directly replace Date, but rather an independent namespace, Temporal.
Wrapping LangGraph's node execution as a Temporal Activity introduces additional serialization constraints and determinism requirements, and the checkpoint semantics need to be mapped between two state machines, so community practice is mostly to borrow its lease and retry capabilities and build a LangGraph adapter layer oneself, rather than replacing it outright.
The core idea of persistent task frameworks (such as Temporal, Restate, Pi Durable) is to write the execution state of each step of a task to persistent storage, so that the task can resume from the breakpoint after a failure and the same task will not be triggered repeatedly.
In Agent scenarios, when using Temporal, all non-deterministic operations (such as LLM calls and tool execution) should be encapsulated as Activities, and the workflow layer should only consume their results; otherwise, replay will cause duplicate charges or state corruption.
Orchestration layer selection advice: if task duration exceeds several minutes and human approval is required, prioritize Temporal or Inngest; if extreme control is sought and the team has the engineering capability, a self-built event-driven loop is an option.
Self-built database-based state machine solutions require handling correctness guarantees such as idempotent writes, checkpoint granularity, concurrency control, and state cleanup oneself, which is why many teams switch to workflow engines after scaling up.
In a durability test that used SIGKILL to kill the worker process mid-scan, of 12 items the first worker refreshed 3, and after restart the second worker refreshed 9, with 0 duplicate refreshes and 24 activity executions (expected value 24).
Sourcerer's batch repricing task runs on Temporal, with two activities per item: refresh comparable data, apply new price.
Tools such as LangGraph, Temporal and LiteLLM handle execution mechanics, not execution governance, and they do not judge whether the output content satisfies business correctness constraints.
