Temporal Difference Learning
A model-free learning method in reinforcement learning that updates value functions through bootstrapping, using the difference between the current estimate and the next-step estimate. It is the foundation of methods such as Q-learning and Actor-Critic.
Core Facts
Timeline (last 90 days)
When key decisions and returns are separated by hundreds of steps, the TD signal attenuates due to the variance accumulated over multiple steps and the discount factor, causing the value of the acquisition action to be severely underestimated.
Temporal difference (TD) learning uses the immediate reward of each step and the estimated value of the next state to update the value of the current state, combining the ideas of Monte Carlo sampling and dynamic programming bootstrapping.
The framework is applicable to temporal difference (TD) learning.
The dopaminergic system encodes reward prediction error—the difference between the reward actually received and the expected reward—a mechanism that is the biological counterpart of the temporal difference (TD) reinforcement learning algorithm.
Rewards in real-world tasks are often extremely sparse and delayed, causing long-horizon credit assignment problems that make it difficult for agents to determine which action led to the final outcome.
