Vercel Functions
Vercel's serverless compute product, which runs code on demand and scales automatically with traffic.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Vercel Functions is the serverless compute capability of the Vercel platform, where developers write backend functions as files and the platform handles building, scaling, and edge distribution.
The plugin provides the Antigravity agent with real-time guidance on the Vercel API, covering products such as AI SDK, Vercel Functions, and Workflow.
Routing Middleware and Vercel Functions share the same geolocation context, so the location information read via geolocation() or request headers is consistent between the two.
Vercel Functions refers to the platform's Serverless and Edge runtimes, used to host functions executed per request, supporting runtime environments such as Node.js and Edge Runtime as well as streaming responses and dynamic rendering.
Vercel's container runtime is currently in Beta and runs on top of Vercel Functions.
Vercel Functions receive the platform-issued token in the request headers, which the SDK reads directly without an extra fetch; the platform reuses unexpired tokens, while Vercel Connect caches vendor tokens in-process and refreshes them as they near expiry.
Vercel states that WebSocket connections follow the same limits and pricing rules as other Function invocations.
Vercel announced the general availability (GA) of WebSocket support for its Functions.
In serverless environments such as AWS Lambda or Vercel Functions, frameworks usually have already parsed the request body, so signature verification can only be performed by relying on the platform's provided raw body access method (such as API Gateway's event.body together with the isBase64Encoded flag).
In serverless architecture, functions have a cold start problem: the first execution after a function has not been called for a long time is slower, and the heavier the initialization logic, the more pronounced it is.
