Vibrato
A vocal technique in singing in which pitch oscillates periodically around a center frequency, typically at a rate of about five to seven times per second. It is produced jointly by periodic tension and relaxation of the laryngeal muscles and fluctuations in respiratory air pressure, and is regarded as an important carrier of emotional tension.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Singing and speech differ fundamentally in vocal mechanism, breath control and artistic expression, and techniques such as vibrato, pharyngeal voice and breathy voice are themselves part of emotional expression.
The experimental analysis reveals that vibrato and pharyngeal techniques are identified as prominent cues for emotion conveyance.
SHAP analysis shows that the effect of vibrato on emotion is context-dependent, specifically depending on articulation rate, so the same vibrato may convey different emotional coloring at different speech rates.
Vibrato is a phenomenon in singing in which pitch fluctuates periodically around a center frequency, typically at about 5 to 7 times per second, produced jointly by periodic tension and relaxation of the laryngeal muscles and fluctuations in respiratory air pressure.
The study's conclusions come from a single research team's experimental setup, the out-of-domain evaluation is limited to only one dataset, VocalSet, and whether the interaction effect between vibrato and articulation rate holds stably in other singing styles remains to be independently verified.
