Weak-to-Strong Generalization
A phenomenon in machine learning and AI alignment in which a more capable student model, trained on labels generated by a weaker teacher model, achieves generalization performance that surpasses the teacher. This phenomenon is a central concern in superalignment research.
Timeline (last 90 days)
The paper arXiv:2610.09044v1 theoretically characterizes how much improvement weak-to-strong generalization can bring, under what conditions it occurs, and when it disappears
The paper identifies transitions among three regimes: quadratic improvement, non-quadratic improvement, and no improvement at all
Weak-to-strong generalization does not hold universally, but depends on conditions such as target structure and training methodology; when conditions are not met, the student may fail to surpass the teacher
