WUE
An indicator that measures the water use efficiency of data centers, calculated as the ratio of total data center water consumption to IT equipment power consumption. It is used to assess the water consumption intensity of cooling systems.
Timeline (last 90 days)
WUE (water usage effectiveness) is calculated as annual total water consumption (liters) divided by total IT equipment energy consumption (kilowatt-hours), in units of liters per kilowatt-hour.
Industry-leading data centers can achieve WUE as low as about 0.2 liters per kilowatt-hour, while facilities using evaporative cooling may exceed 1.5 liters per kilowatt-hour.
WUE reflects only efficiency, not total volume; an efficient data center, if enormous in scale, can still consume a startling total amount of water.
Tech companies often claim to use "efficient" cooling solutions, but efficiency often refers to power usage effectiveness (PUE) rather than water usage effectiveness (WUE), so data centers may still draw large amounts of water under energy-saving messaging.
WUE (Water Usage Effectiveness) is used to measure the water consumption per unit of IT load, because the cooling of large-scale AI training clusters often consumes large amounts of regional water resources.
