Abliteration
A weight-editing technique for large language models that identifies and eliminates, via orthogonal projection, the linear direction vectors in a model's residual stream associated with refusal behavior, causing the model to lose its safety-refusal capability without requiring retraining. It was proposed by Maxime Labonne and colleagues in 2024.

"Abliterated" refers to ablation-style fine-tuning of a model that weakens the model's built-in refusal tendency through targeted weight modification.
Abliteration is a technique that removes a model's refusal behavior through directional vector operations; suffixes such as Heretic and Omega typically refer to community versions that have undergone such processing or scenario-specific fine-tuning.
Abliteration and jailbreaking are fundamentally different in nature: jailbreaking bypasses guardrails at inference time through prompts, while abliteration permanently modifies the model at the weight level
The Abliteration method was proposed and popularized by researchers including Maxime Labonne in 2024.
The core principle of Abliteration is to identify the refusal direction in the model's residual stream and eliminate it via orthogonal projection from the weight matrices.
The Abliteration process requires no retraining and can be completed through weight editing alone.
Experiments show that models processed with abliteration exhibit almost no degradation on standard capability evaluations, but the probability of refusing harmful requests drops significantly.
Models processed through abliteration suffer almost no loss in general capability, yet lose most of their safety constraints.
The principle of abliteration technology is to identify and suppress the directional vectors associated with refusal behavior inside the model, thereby preventing the model from triggering safety refusals, rather than retraining the model.
The Abliteration technique was first popularized by community researchers including failspy in 2024.
