HRTF
Head-Related Transfer Function; describes the spectral transformations that occur as sound travels from a source through the human head, pinnae, and torso to the eardrums. It is a core technology for spatial audio localization and is used in binaural rendering to simulate three-dimensional sound fields.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Spatial audio, through techniques such as HRTF, gives sound a sense of direction and distance and can serve as an alternative channel to visual information, providing navigation and alerts for landmarks and teammate positions.
Monaural audio superimposes sounds from different directions into a single waveform, physically losing spatial localization cues such as interaural time difference (ITD), interaural level difference (ILD), and head-related transfer function (HRTF).
Commercial products commonly use generic HRTFs—a set of parameters selected or averaged from measurements of a large number of subjects—which are effective for most people but optimal for none.
The legal nature of HRTF filter coefficients or processing logic recovered through measurement is fundamentally different from directly extracting a vendor's code or parameter files.
In recent years, Apple has begun introducing a feature that scans the ear canal using the front-facing camera to generate personalized HRTFs.
The most accurate HRTF measurements must be completed in an anechoic chamber by placing microphones at the entrance of the ear canal and sequentially playing test signals from dozens of directions.
HRTF is a mathematical function that describes the frequency changes and time delays in sound wave propagation to the human eardrum caused by the structure of the head, pinna, and shoulders.
HRTF (Head-Related Transfer Function) is used to model the frequency changes and time delays produced by the diffraction and reflection of sound waves due to the structure of the head, pinna, and shoulders.
