Metacognitive Controller
A lightweight plug-in embedded in diffusion language models that dynamically decides when to stop generation and how long to generate by analyzing denoising states and interaction history, achieving dynamic allocation of computational resources.
Timeline (last 90 days)
The metacognitive controller is a lightweight plug-in embedded in the diffusion backbone that, by analyzing the current denoising state and interaction history, predicts whether the current token should be finalized and how far generation should extend.
The metacognitive controller does not directly generate tokens; instead, it observes the backbone network's intermediate states (such as the confidence distribution over denoising steps and hidden-layer activations) as well as the agent's interaction history with the environment, and outputs two decision signals.
During training, the metacognitive controller is optimized over agent trajectories via reinforcement learning or a differentiable decision objective to balance correctness against computational cost.
Compared with the most efficient baseline, the metacognitive controller reduces inference FLOPs by an average of 20.6% while maintaining competitive task accuracy.
Ablation experiments confirmed the effectiveness of each component of the metacognitive controller.
The metacognitive controller method is orthogonal to existing diffusion acceleration techniques and can be stacked with them.
