PostGIS
A geospatial extension for PostgreSQL, written in C, that adds support for geographic information system (GIS) functionality, enabling storage, querying, and analysis of spatial and geographic data within the PostgreSQL database.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Lakehouse//RT now supports running spatial SQL and spatial joins directly within its platform, without needing to move data to external systems such as PostGIS.
Traditional lakehouse architectures usually have no native spatial index support, and users need to move data to systems such as PostGIS to perform spatial operations and then import it back, a path whose latency is often measured in hours.
Open-source spatial databases and analysis libraries such as PostGIS, GeoPandas, and DuckDB Spatial have greatly reduced processing costs, enabling individual developers to complete multi-layer overlay and spatial queries locally.
PostGIS is nearly the industry standard in the spatial data domain.
The advantage of loading spatial data into a database is that spatial logic and business logic can be jointly processed in the same SQL query, with the backend interface directly returning GeoJSON so the frontend can render it on a map without additional conversion.
The course uses Docker to start PostgreSQL + PostGIS, imports GeoJSON and Shapefiles, and establishes GiST spatial indexes.
