PTC
Programmatic Tool Calling, a paradigm that has models plan first and then generate executable TypeScript code, executing tool calls in batches through loops and function composition. Unlike the traditional ReAct-style step-by-step reasoning-and-calling loop, it significantly reduces the number of tool calls and reasoning round trips.
Core Facts
Timeline (last 90 days)
The idea behind PTC is often called "Code as Action" or "programmatic tool calling" in academic and engineering circles, that is, letting the model generate a complete script to execute multiple tool calls at once rather than outputting call instructions step by step.
PTC stands for Programmatic Tool Calling.
PTC mode has the same capabilities as standard mode, but has the model write code to call tools in batches rather than calling them one by one.
PTC mode includes all the functions of standard mode and also has batch execution, canvas isolation, plan compression, a sub-agent mechanism, and a full set of coding capabilities.
PTC mode works with a sandbox runtime environment and a canvas isolation mechanism to limit the range of resources that code can access and prevent state pollution between different tasks.
In Alpha 4, the Web's PTC mode no longer exposes general Workflow tools directly to the model by default.
The core concept of parametric modeling was first commercially realized by Pro/ENGINEER (now renamed PTC Creo) in 1987, recording each modeling operation in a feature tree and allowing modifications to drive geometric changes through parameters.
