Rounding Position Alignment
A numerical stability technique for mixed-precision (such as BF16) reinforcement learning training of LLMs. By aligning the timing of floating-point rounding between inference and training at sensitive operations such as RoPE, SwiGLU and RMSNorm, intermediate results are computed in FP32 and rounding is deferred to the output stage, thereby preserving on-policy consistency and preventing training collapse.
Timeline (last 90 days)
A recent study proposes that by aligning the rounding positions in inference and training, BF16 reinforcement learning training can be stabilized without changing the inference engine, matrix multiplication and attention kernels, or learning objectives.
The study's intervention does not change the inference engine, matrix multiplication and attention kernels, nor does it modify the learning objective, and therefore has good compatibility and practicality.
Compared with global precision adjustments, the rounding-position alignment method has lower computational overhead and is easy to integrate into existing systems.
