TPU
A Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) is a custom application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) designed by Google specifically for machine learning workloads. Compared with general-purpose GPUs, TPUs are deeply optimized for tensor operations, enabling efficient acceleration of neural network training and inference. TPUs are deployed primarily in Google data centers, support deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow, and are made available as a cloud computing service through Google Cloud, with applications in image recognition, natural language processing, and other AI domains.
Core Facts
Google's TPUs have iterated to the fifth generation (TPU v5) since 2016.
TPU (Tensor Processing Unit) is an AI-specific chip independently developed by Google since 2015.
Several large technology companies are building custom AI chip teams: Google is iterating on the TPU, Amazon is developing Trainium and Inferentia, Microsoft is developing the Maia chip in-house, and Meta is advancing the MTIA project.
Timeline (last 90 days)
In-house chip routes (such as Google TPU and Amazon Trainium) are feasible in specific scenarios, but still lag NVIDIA in generality and ecosystem maturity.
OpenAI reportedly plans to procure Google TPU chips.
To support AI infrastructure (data centers, TPU and GPU purchases, power and cooling), Alphabet's capital expenditure has risen sharply in recent years.
The MAC array (multiply-accumulate array) is the core computing unit of an NPU/TPU, and its scale (such as 64×64) determines the upper limit of per-cycle multiply-accumulate throughput; the channel count and spatial dimensions of each model layer must match it to fully utilize it.
SiFu's node-signal-flow design naturally fits the parallel and memory-access patterns of existing GPUs/TPUs, enabling abstract dynamical primitives to be mapped into executable operator graphs.
Optical circuit switching (OCS) switches optical paths directly in the optical domain without optical-electrical conversion; AI training traffic is highly predictable, so OCS can pre-establish optical paths like circuit switching, and Google has already deployed OCS in its TPU clusters.
The pairing of Google's TPU with its own Transformer models is an earlier industry precedent for software-hardware co-design.
Common TPU, silicone or PC materials show markedly different coefficients of static friction against a phone's glass or metal back when surface treatments differ.
SemiAnalysis reported that Meta confirmed it is running TPU inference in production.
In the past, running PyTorch on TPU usually required going through the XLA bridge layer for graph conversion, which led to problems such as incomplete operator coverage, a fragmented debugging chain, and performance not meeting expectations.
